COTES Engineering has signed a contract to develop full scope of investment and technical documents to implement a black oil-free burning system at TPP Kostolac B, Serbia. Replacement of existing black oil-fired burners with coal-dust fired ones (with the black oil-free burning system) is expected. Also, integrated heat engineering testing of boiler equipment will be performed. The electroionization technology for fuel burning (ETFB) allows avoiding black oil, thereby unloading boiler by 40%, increasing stability of burning non-design coals, and improving boiler unit operation safety.
Thermal power plant (TPP) Kostolac B comprises two units having rated power 2 x 348.5 MW. The first unit was commissioned in 1988, and the second one in 1991. In 2015-2019, tower boilers having steam-production capacity 1,000 tones per hour have been upgraded by Steinmuller and General Electric, and due to this, NOx emissions could be reduced to 200 mg/nm3. As a result of setup and heat engineering testing of boilers, COTES Engineering should confirm the characteristics claimed after the refurbishment, and issue recommendations and proposals to improve efficiency and reliability of TPP Kostolac B boiler operations.
COTES specialists have already moved to Serbia to examine and collect coal dust samples to perform in situ ignition tests in the collaborative SB RAS/COTES laboratory. By the end of the year, TPP laser scan will be made to build a digital information model “as is”, which will further allow to minimize risks during basic design and will be used as a basis for BIM, i.e. future refurbishment model. Moreover, COTES specialists will perform feasibility study and develop bid documents to select contractors for equipment refurbishment. The work should be completed by June 2021.
